According to clients at a local halfway house for the mentally disabled, psychiatric drugs pacify, or render innocuous those who use them. Withdrawal from the drugs may trigger psychotic behavior. A good meditation method would help.
There may be a correlation between blood sugar swings and bipolar syndrome. Macrobiotic teachers use foods rich in glucose to stabilize blood sugar. These include brown rice, aduki beans and kabocha squash.
In 1986 Denver researchers used the 5 hour glucose tolerance test. Those who ate potatoes before the test saw their sugar levels explode off the charts. Those who ate brown rice remained constant and normal throughout the test. Source: Michio Kushi, Diabetes and Hypoglycemia
